Is a sd card necessary for the garmin nuvi 680?
I just bought my boyfriend the garmin nuvi 680 for his birthday and the salesman told me how in order to have maps on it I must have an sd card...is this true? What is the point of the sd card? I thought they came with maps already on them! So confused...

For virtually every GPS unit out there, everything you need to get going is included in the box. If an SD card is required on any GPS, it will also be included in the box. However, most GPSs, such as the nuvi 680, have all the maps pre-loaded in internal memory.
Garmin's website shows that the Nuvi 680 has maps of North America pre-loaded. The Salesman was probably describing the SD card's necessity for additional maps or map upgrades. You do not have to worry about including an SD card to make the birthday present complete.
SD compatibility for GPS units is generally for optional use. SD slots can be used to install map updates or access different maps, play videos, pictures or music, and provide other specific software features such as additional language translation. Fortunately, SD cards are inexpensive, so if your boyfriend ever wants to listen to MP3s or view pictures while on the road, he can easily get an SD card to use with his GPS.
