Garmin Nuvi 660 routing problem?

I recently purchased a Garmin Nuvi 660 and have been using it on local trips before I use it on a longer trip. I've noticed on multiple occassions that after keying in an address it will give me a route which I know will work but is longer than the most direct. When I rekey the address or change location slightly (maybe a mile down the road), it will provide me with the better route. I'm sure its something that I'm doing.

Just wanted to figure this out before I go out to unknown (to me) territory.

Any thoughts?
